LARSEN-AMSTERDAM RESIDENCE

NORTH SALEM, NEW YORK

BEFORE

AFTER

Located on a country lane, this existing home had an elegant front facade with a Palladian window and classic proportions. The back of the house had beautiful views and surrounding grounds. However, as the small picture on the left shows, the rear's connection to the outside was limited and the view of this facade was disjointed. This porch and renovation was designed to reconnect the house to backyard activity and views while maintaining the building's traditional character. A new library was designed to create an inward feeling of space. This design received the First Place-People's Choice Award from the Vermont AIA in 1995.
