MARSHALL CENTER

ST. ALBANS, VERMONT

A Vermont non-profit housing developer sought to renovate the Marshall Center (also known as the Fairfield Street School) into 14 units of affordable housing; four of the units are reserved for tenants with mental handicaps. To develop the building a variance for density was required. We were responsible for meeting the planning and zoning variance requirements that made this project possible.

This National Register building was unaltered since its original construction in 1911. We worked with the existing historic plan and elements to preserve its original character. We built out into the 16-foot wide hall but kept the full width and expansive feeling of the original tin ceilings visible. Original split floor levels were retained and made into duplexes. We raised the basement floor to provide handicapped units access to grade without the need for ramps and elevators.
