Mary Johnson Children Center asked us to generate
plans for the renovation of their existing facility and a significant
addition, for their 65 children child-care and after-school program center. The Center was particularly concerned about making a healthy environment for
children and making sure that contaminated soils on the site did not harm
their children. We developed a
building program, design options, and cost estimates, along with doing code
analysis and permit research. This work was used to gain federal and local
funding for the project. The building design is based on Mary Johnson's
educational philosophy, and reviews of other child care centers in the
region.
We drew up construction plans and provided
assistance during construction, within Mary Johnson’s challenging budget,
site, and schedule constraints. The plans we furnished included measures to
deal with existing moisture, energy, structural, historic preservation and
contaminated soils issues, in addition to providing optimum indoor air quality
for the occupants through careful materials selection, building envelope
design, and ventilation strategies.
