In
1979, Gesundheit Institute purchased 310 acres in
rural West
Virginia to
develop a health center. They saw this
project as a model for health care, and wanted the physical design of their
facility to reinforce their ideas about health. They asked that the buildings and the
landscape both be places that would promote healing, health, and human
interaction. We worked with them in
planning how this project could grow over time and provided drawing and
written materials to assist them in fundraising. We worked with Gesundheit
analyzing the resources of the site, clarifying the activities that they want
to encourage, and working to plan how these activities will enhance their
unique property. Specifically we have
provided overall master plan design, detailed
landscape plans, coordination of utilities infrastructure design, and
architectural design for a crafts and workshop complex. With Gesundheit,
we have designed an innovative, participatory planning process resulting in a
physical design that reflects their vision and concerns.
